Boagrius Rex
Ex-Pirate. Criminal. Mercenary
The Hooks
Bounty Hunter: Rex is a wanted man, with quite the hefty bounty.
Axe for Hire: Have a dangerous job that needs an extra hand? Maybe try hiring his skills from the Marauder's Guild.
Emergency Healing: Bleeding out, weak, desperate. Though he may be on death's door, he's still as defiant as ever. He either (begrudgingly) asks for help, or lets you help him.
Bar Rumors: One of his rare instances of heading to town, he could mingle with the locals sharing rumors.
Black Market Deals: Rex is trying to get out of a life of crime...but the more illicit jobs always pay more than his mercenary contracts. Just don't expect him to get back on a boat any time soon.

The Past
"Pregnant again? Which child is this gonna be, again?" -FatherBoagrius Rex never had a hard life growing up. Born in Tural, he was the son of a wealthy merchant, and he never went hungry or thirsty or cold. Despite this, he practically didn't exist to his parents. His father was much too busy making trade deals to be at home, much less acknowledge Rex's existance. His mother was more focused on throwing extravagant parties to impress her friends to notice either. Most of his life he spent time by himself. There came a time when Boagrius began to wonder what else was out there."Running away, after all we've done for you?!" -MotherThough only twelve years old, Rex decided to be the master of his own fate. Leaving his life of luxury, his posessions, his siblings, everything he knew behind him, he set out in search of something to make life worth living. Something he'd be good at, something he'd enjoy, some kind of adventure, something that'd make him piles of coin. And he found just that.
Smuggling isn't anyone's first choice of profession. It's dangerous, dirty, and usually punishable by hanging. But Rex knew the risks. Besides, when you're young and desperate for money, anything that pays seems like a good deal. If only Boagrius knew what he just got himself in to."Iffin you can't lift that keg out the hold, I'll have ye keelhauled and thrown overboard!" -Quartermaster JarrikThe Captain smiled at him with a mouth full of blackened teeth. Rex had ambition-and the Captain sought to take advantage of that. Through sixteen years of rigorous deckwork and beatings, Boagrius gained an imposing physique. The fleet grew. The coffers filled. Tons and tons of goods were smuggled and pirated under the nose of the navy. Rex would stay with the crew until the Captain decided to smuggle cargo a little too human."I WANT THIS BASTARD'S HEAD ON A FUCKIN' PLATE!" -Captain BlackteethThroughout his years as a pirate, Rex had seen all kinds of work: smuggling illegal weapons, smuggling illegal drugs, plain ol' piracy. Occasionally, people will request to be smuggled. Could be someone that needed to flee from loan sharks, or escape justice. The 'why' never mattered as long as the coin was good.
It seemed peculiar that there was a multitude of people being shuffled onto the ship. Normally, only one or two people would be smuggled at a time. And these people were being ushered into cages. A rising mix of anger and confusion as Rex realized. These weren't paying customers, these were slaves.
The Captain was immediately confronted. The Captain smiled at him with a mouth full of black teeth. He assured Rex that this was the future of the crew. Rex tried to reason with the Captain. Talking turned to an argument. An argument turned into drawn weapons. Mind you, Rex had 16 years to hone his skill with a handaxe. But the Captain had decades of experience with a sword. And the Captain knew this.
Cut after cut after cut. Former crewmates cheered at the spectacle, watching Rex futilely go for a killing blow, only to be parried and have another slash mark his flesh. He was losing blood. He had to end this the only way he knew how: remove the Captain's ability to fight at all. A swing, a feint, the sickening sound of metal cutting through skin and bone.
The Captain's freshly severed hand plops on the deck, the clang of his sword following shortly after. Rex stood there in awe, hushed murmurings from the crew around him. Captain Blackteeth gave a command: kill Rex. He pushed through the crowd, knowing that his only chance at survival was getting off this damn boat. He was close to death as it was, there was no way he'd be able to fight the entirety of the crew. He lept overboard. Who knew that saltwater felt like fire in open wounds._"One way ticket to Limsa O'minsa. Ain't comin' back here, chap?"-Unnamed ferrymanRex had finally washed ashore. The sun had set a while ago. Probably for the best, as not only were the lawmen looking after him, but a whole damn pirate empire. He managed to staunch the bleeding. Sitting on the beach now, he took tally of what he had on him: torn clothes, one handaxe (good for throwing), sturdy boots, and enough gil to get him out of this damn country.
He laid low for a few days. He knew they were looking. But there are many hiding spots in the jungles of the New World. A few days of staying out of sight, of stealing whatever provisions he needed, he finally found a way out. Whatever life he lived was no longer an option. He used the last of his fortune to purchase passage to Limsa Lominsa, where he'd hoped to start his life over.
